Jean-Pierre Gauthier

For the BNSC 2018, I am presenting a reworked version of the work Asservissements (Servitude), which was created in 2012 for the Victoriaville International Music Festival. The sound installation, Asservissements, is my first entirely programmable string orchestra. Robotic bows stroke metallic strings amplified with microphones. The quadrophonic replaying and spatial sound of each instrument is randomly produced. Each instrument, therefore, moves freely within this sound space, imbuing each composition (3 up until now) with slight variations with regards to the spatial orchestration. On the one hand programming tools allow me to create a music ensemble that plays in a coordinated and precise way, but on the other hand they let the ensemble generate random spatial sounds.

Jean-Pierre Gauthier has been active on the contemporary art scene since the mid-1990s. His artistic research is of a hybrid nature, one that integrates the visual, kinetic, media, and sound arts. His installations have been presented throughout Canada as well as in Europe, Asia and the Americas. The artist is represented by ELLEPHANT |ART Gallery in Montreal.
